Most alarming was the evidence of mass effect: The tumor appeared to be exacerbating her previously manageable depression, causing personality and mood changes. Doctors were most worried about herniation , an often fatal condition that occurs when the brain is squeezed and shifts out of position. She was deteriorating, Gawronski recalled, and if the downward pressure from the tumor increased, she could have lapsed into a coma. Gawronski estimated that Bahnsen was possibly days away from that. On Dec. 4, 2006, Bahnsen underwent an emergency operation to remove the benign meningioma .

If these thoughts have been present for several weeks or months then yes, you may be depressed. There is a big difference between feeling down and having depression and this brings me to my next point. You cannot just ‘snap out of it’ or ‘pull yourself together’ I like analogies so steady your hats because here comes another one. Depression is like trying to run through water and being told to get over it is akin to suddenly being able to move like you can on dry land. It’s impossible.

Some issues, like a brain lesion, can cause similar symptoms but require a very different treatment route. What is the treatment for depression? Study researchers attribute the lower incidence of depression cases in recent immigrants to their stronger ties to their culture and family, which would serve as a support system. People with mild depression often benefit from the use of antidepressants or from talk therapy with a psychologist or mental counselor. Those with severe depression may need both forms of treatment or care in a psychiatric facility if feelings of suicide are present. Psychiatric facilities are also beneficial for people who have lost much of their daily function to depression.
The key during the holidays is to remind ourselves that pleasing everyone is unrealistic. We must take care of ourselves first and foremost otherwise we are no good to anyone else. Find time now – more than ever to exercise, read a book, do something that relaxes us; our families, friends and co-workers will thank us in the end. Another issue that can be exacerbated during the holiday season is depression. Some people may find this time of year particularly difficult as holidays are generally associated with a time to share with families. Feelings of loneliness and depression are very common around the holidays; and while most people dont live in glass houses or have lives with fairy tale endings, we all long for some resemblance of perfection around the holidays.
